Spanish Word for Bull Running

The Spanish phrase "Corriendo con Los Torros" means Bull Running in English.

Each year from 7th to 14th July, thousands of people pack into Pamplona to begin Spain's most famous bull-running fiesta to honor Navarre capital's patron saint, San Fermin. Spain celebrates more than 3,000 fiestas each year, but the 7 days of bull running are the favorite in terms of spectacle and excitement.

After daybreak on the 7th July, Runners, with who are mainly young men, gather at the starting line at the bottom of Santo Domingo. They crowd together and sing to the image of San Fermin which is placed in a niche on a wall. The song goes: "A San Fermin pedimos, por ser nuestro patron, nos guie en el encierro dandanos su bendicion" ("We ask San Fermin, as our Patron, to guide us through the Bull Run and give us his blessing.")

It is then that a rocket goes off and a number of fighting bulls are released onto the streets. A second rocket goes off to inform everyone that the bulls are loose in the street. The bulls run along the narrow street 825 meters to a bull ring. The runners dash in front of the bulls, aiming to feel the breath of the bull on their backs. They aim to get as close as possible, whilst at the same time trying to avoid getting impaled by their sharp horns. Crazy? Oh yes.

When the bulls reach the end of the street, they go into pens until later that day when they are killed in a bullfight.
