Madrid is the capital of Spain and the largest city in Spain. It is the third most popular municipality in the European Union after Greater London and Berlin, and the third most populous in the European Union after Paris and London.

The city is located on the river Manzanares in the centre of both the country and the Community of Madrid.

Because of its economic output, standard of living, and market size, Madrid is considered to be the major financial centre of the Iberian Peninsula. The head offices of the vast majority of the major Spanish companies are in Madrid, along with the headquarters of three of the world's largest companies: Telefonica, Repsol-YPF, and Banco Santander.

The city has an approximate population of 3.2 million, and the urban population area is approximately 5.1 million.

Madrid has a Continental Mediterranean climate with cool winters, due to its altitude, and periodic snowfalls and minimum temperatures often below 0 *C. Summer tends to be hot with temperatures that constantly surpass 30 *C in July, sometimes reaching 40 *C. Summer and winter tend to be the driest seasons, with most rainfall occurring in the autumn and spring.
