Spanish Word for Etiquette
The Spanish word "etiqueta" means etiquette in English.
Being etiquette, especially when eating, is of great importance to the Spanish community.
When Spanish are invited to other homes for food, it is only polite to take a gift of chocolates, pastries, cakes, wine, liqueur, brandy, or flowers for the hostess.
If the hosts have children, and they will be included in the evening, it is courteous to take a small gift for them also.
If ever you are attending the home of Spanish when visiting their country, there are a few basic things to remember:
It is etiquette to remain standing until you are invited to sit down.
You may even be shown to a particular seat.
Your hands should always be visible when eating.
Keep your wrists resting on the edge of the table.
You should never begin to eat until the hostess begins.
Use utensils to eat most foods.
A knife and fork is even used to eat fruit.
The host will give the first toast.
An honored guest should return the toast later in the meal.
It is acceptable for a woman to make a toast.
Laying your knife and fork parallel on your plate, with the tines facing up and the handles facing to the right, indicates that you have finished your meal.
Do not get up until the guest of honor does.
If you follow these basic etiquette rules when visiting a Spanish home, you will have no problem at all.
