Spanish Word for Food

The Spanish word "comida" means food in English.

Comida is extremely significant in Spanish culture. It can safely be said that the Spanish love their food. A normal breakfast (desayuno) in Spain typically consists of only a cup of coffee. However, it is normal for many to have an accompaniment of a croissant or other pastry. Whilst a typical American breakfast would consist of pancakes, bacon and eggs, the traditional Spanish breakfast consists of the hugely popular churros, which are served sprinkled with sugar or dunked in hot chocolate.

Lunch (almuerzo) is eaten by Spanish between 2:00pm and 4:00pm. As this meal is classed as the main one of the day, it is generally larger than the dinner meal (cena). A typical Spanish lunch will have several courses. This first course is always the lighter part of the meal, which generally consists of soup or salad. The second course is then a meat or fish dish. The dessert (postre) can be a simple piece of fruit, a typical Spanish flan, a cake or sweet pastry.

A traditional Spanish dinner (cena) is much smaller than the midday lunch. It generally consists of a salad, sandwich, or a selection of tapas. Dinner is generally eaten later, especially on weekends and during the summer; whereby they can sit down to eat anytime from 9:00pm to midnight.
