Spanish Phrase for Halloween
The Spanish phrase "vispera de Todos los Santos" means Halloween in English.
Halloween is a joyous and happy holiday in Spain. It is a time to remember friends and family who have died. Halloween is officially commemorated on 2nd November, and the three day celebration actually begins on the evening of 31st October.
In Spain, Halloween is designed to honor the dead, who are believed to return to their homes. Therefore, many families create an altar in their home and decorate it with sweets, flowers, photographs, fresh water, and samples of the deceased's favorite foods and drinks. A basin and towel are often left out so that the spirit can wash prior to indulging in the feast. Candles and incense are burned to help the departed find his or her way home. The gravesides of the deceased are also tidied by the family and then adorned with flowers, wreaths, or paper streamers. Many times a live person is placed inside a coffin which is then carried through the streets, while vendors toss fruit, flowers and sweets into the casket.
Relatives gather at the graveside on the 2nd November and have a picnic and reminisce.
