Spanish Word for Kiss
The Spanish word "beso" means kiss in English.
Kisses are of great significance in Spanish culture. Spanish people greet each other far more personally than we do. They hug each other, when first meeting. Even the men do this and it is simply a sign of friendship. This may seem strange to any tourist that is visiting Spain, but it is simply a part of their culture. Women will also greet other women with "besitos" (kisses). They have absolutely no romantic meaning. Men will usually greet women with besitos. This means that they touch each others cheeks while making a kissing noise with their lips.
It can be a culture shock to any visitor, when they know someone living in Spain. The two friends could be walking down the street together, or in a bar for example, and your Spanish resident may meet someone that they know and give each other kisses. You will then be introduced to that person and they will kiss you in exactly the same way. This is a sign that you are accepted as a friend also. We would probably shake hands, but the Spanish kiss.
