Each year, this famous Spanish holiday is celebrated on the first Sunday in May. This is a day to pay tribute to mothers all over Spain who in return usually receive gifts from their children.

Mother's Day is a time of breakfast in bed, family gatherings, and "I Love You" notes dotted all over. Even though the exact history of this special day is unknown, it is claimed that it emerged from a custom of mother worship in ancient Greece.

Traditionally, children in Spain spend the days leading up to mother's Day, drawing a card and practicing a poem as a surprise to their mothers. Shops sell chocolates, flowers and other Mother's Day gifts. However, many children choose to make their own presents as they believe that it gives a personal touch and shows their mother's that they appreciate everything that they do for them.

Mother's Day is treated more like a family birthday in Spain. The entire family gathers together for a special meal either at home or in a restaurant.
