Spanish Word for Religion

The Spanish word "religion" means religion in English.

Religion is of great significance to the Spanish culture. The majority of Spaniards are formerly Roman Catholic; however, different religious beliefs are accepted.

There have been long periods, during the history of Spain, where different religious groups have coexisted, including Muslims, Jews, and Christians.

There still remains to be certain traditions that manifest more like a cultural event than one of religion.

Spain celebrates Easter Week (Santa Semana) much more than most European countries and street processions are organized in most Spanish towns each evening. During this time, many participants of the processions wear peaked, black hats as the sign of a penitent and walk barefoot, carrying a burden of some kind.

Religious history is apparent in each small town, where the most grandiose building is typically the church. In the large cities the Cathedrals are almost museums.
