Spanish Word for Snacks
The Spanish word "tapas" means snacks in English.
No particular food comes into the bracket of being tapas. Anything can be tapas such as paella, croquettes, or even ham and cheese on toast. As long as the portion is small and served with your drink it is tapas.
Tapas are not starters. If you decide to eat tapas, it will either be a quick snack or you will have several and make a meal of it.
A "Tapa" is in actual fact a lid or cover that originated many years ago. A slice of ham or cheese was served with your drink and was placed over the top of your glass. The tapa is an important part of Spanish culture. Most Spaniards will take tapas with a drink.
Tapas are generally quarter of the size of a full meal and the content will vary from region to region. For example, seafood tapas are in abundance on the coast. Inland you may find that meat such as veal or venison, beef or pork is more on the menu. Each region will also have its own specialties.
If you want to sample as many Spanish dishes as possible, then tapas is the best way to do it.
