Spanish Word for Spanish Omelette
The Spanish word "Tortilla Espaņola" means Spanish omelette in English.
The Spanish omelette is made with potatoes and onions, and along with paella is perhaps one of the best-known Spanish dishes. It is impossible to find a self-respecting tapas bar in Spain that does not feature tortilla in its selection.
As delicious as it is, Spanish omelette lends itself to countless variations according to taste. Some cooks choose to put mushrooms, beans, spinach, and tomatoes in their recipe, whilst others choose to omit the onion and cover the tortilla in tomatoe sauce. Others would not dream of serving the tortilla without helpings of mayonnaise.
Each region, and each tapas bar or small restaurant will have its own variation of the traditional tortilla. This divine tapa can be served either hot or cold. However, many choose to cook the tortilla and then allow it to cool, whereby they cut it into wedges, season with salt and sprinkle with lemon juice to taste whilst serving it at room temperature. Yum, I can think of nothing more delicious.
