Fishing is of great importance to the Spanish. With the many fishing villages being full of men either preparing their boats for a day at sea, or those simply sitting on the rocks and casting out, it is impossible to walk through the villages without seeing someone with a rod.

Fishing off Spain was similar to elsewhere in the Mediterranean, whereby there were typically two or three men in a small lateen-rigged fishing boat. The fishermen did not generally cook aboard ship due to the fact that they were never far from the port.
